Perry Shuman, MD North Country Orthopaedic Surgeon Receives Recertification

July 2011

Watertown, New York --- North Country Orthopaedic Group surgeon Perry T. Shuman, M.D. was recently recertified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons (ABOS).

The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery serves the public and medical profession by establishing standards for the education of orthopaedic surgeons. To be board certified, physicians must pass both oral and written exams that evaluate his or her understanding of orthopaedics and its application in daily practice.

To maintain certification, the orthopaedic surgeon must go through a recertification process every ten years that includes a review of the surgeon’s credentials, as well as oral and written testing. Recently the ABOS updated its recertification process to a Maintenance of Certification (MOC) schedule; the MOC requires physicians to complete additional documentation and reporting in support of lifelong learning. Dr. Shuman will be certified to practice orthopaedic surgery through 2022.

“Board certification and maintenance of certification is important as it represents my commitment to my profession,” states Dr. Shuman. “It is important that I demonstrate to my patients, and my colleagues, my commitment to continual learning,” continues Dr. Shuman.

Dr. Shuman received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater and completed his orthopaedic training at SUNY Upstate Medical University. He is currently Samaritan Medical Center’s chief of surgery. Dr. Shuman is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Powell, who served in the position for the past 10 years, says that it was time for him to “pass the baton” to someone else.  “I enjoyed the challenge of the job, but I felt it was time for one of my partners to step up and lead.”

Dr. Shuman, who served as vice president for most of the 16 years he has been with the group, concedes that Dr. Powell will be a tough act to follow.  “Ed has seen our group through significant growth and expansion during his term as president,” states Dr. Shuman. “I am amazed at how he was able to devote so much time and energy to administrative work while still maintaining a busy and successful surgical practice.”

Dr. Shuman is a member of several professional organizations including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the New York State Medical Society, the Eastern Orthopaedic Association and the Medical Society of Jefferson County. In addition to Caroline’s placement seven women placed in the top 50 and are: Julia Mancuso, California placed 5th; Lindsey Kildow, Colorado tied for 13th; Libby Ludlow, Washington placed 15th; Bryna McCarthy, Vermont placed 17th; Kirsten Clark, Maine placed 23rd and Jonna Mendes, California placed 35th.
